Meeting the challenge

NCEES adapted its exam development activities to address travel limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. While exam development meetings were canceled during the initial months of the crisis, NCEES instituted virtual meetings for critical exam development tasks in June.

COVID-19 had a significant impact on computer-based testing and pencil-and-paper exam administrations in 2020. To help slow the spread of the virus, NCEES canceled the April 2020 pencil-and-paper exam administration in March. Pearson VUE test centers, which administer NCEES computer-based exams, closed in March. They began opening with social distancing protocols, including reduced capacity, in May.

To address the impact on examinees in the spring and summer, NCEES introduced a range of adaptations for the fall and winter.
